
OpenAI Chief Executive Sam Altman has ordered an all-hands push to rapidly improve ChatGPT, in the strongest acknowledgment yet that the company is under mounting pressure from fast-advancing rivals. In an internal memo, Altman declared a “code red” initiative, temporarily shelving several major projects so teams can focus entirely on upgrading the chatbot’s performance.
The memo indicated that OpenAI will focus on improving speed, reliability, and personalization of responses, among other areas where users have complained lately. On the other hand, Altman said the day-to-day experience of ChatGPT “still has a lot of work to do,” while it attracts one of the largest weekly user bases in tech.
Google Gemini surge raises an alarm
The renewed sense of urgency follows Google’s release of a new version of its Gemini AI model, which outperforms OpenAI on many benchmark tests and boosted investor confidence in the Google AI ecosystem. Gemini’s popularity has also grown rapidly-its monthly active users rose from 450 million in July to 650 million in October, helped by the viral success of its image generator, Nano Banana.
OpenAI is further challenged by the rising competitor Anthropic, whose models with the name Claude are very popular among its enterprise customer base.
Financial stakes are rising
The rapid expansion of OpenAI comes with enormous infrastructure costs. It has committed to hundreds of billions of dollars in future data-center spending-investments that require a steep trajectory of revenue growth.

Altman asked employees to take temporary team transfers, and the company will now conduct daily progress calls dedicated to enhancing ChatGPT. Nick Turley, head of ChatGPT, said the rejuvenated focus aims to have the chatbot feel “more intuitive and personal.”
Next Generation Model Promises ‘Stronger Reasoning’
Altman reassured staff that OpenAI will be releasing a new, reasoning-focused AI model next week; he told them it performs better than Google’s latest Gemini version. The company insists its research progress is strong amidst the growing competition.

Struggles With User Experience
OpenAI has faced criticism in recent times for declines in the quality of some responses from ChatGPT. Users reported that the GPT-5 model launched in August felt less helpful, colder in tone, and struggled with basic queries. Updates since have aimed at making the model more natural and better aligned with user instructions.
It also showed that OpenAI had done a “code orange” in the past to handle similar performance issues; the company’s use of yellow, orange, and red as escalating urgency levels makes this latest declaration the highest-priority push yet.
