Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi tweeted on X, calling the act “an assault on the dignity of our judiciary and the spirit of our Constitution.” He added, “Such hatred has no place in our nation and must be condemned.”
Context Behind the Outburst
The episode followed after a spat over the words of CJI Gavai on the course of a case involving a seven-foot Lord Vishnu statue in Khajuraho. The remarks had caused a furore on social media. Later, the Chief Justice clarified in open court that his remark was out of context and added again, “I respect all religions.”
In spite of provocation, Justice Gavai remained calm and went ahead with the hearing, garnering applause from the legal community as well as the Prime Minister.
