Digital Census 2027 India- On October 27, 2021 the Union Cabinet furthered its preparation of the Census 2027 by approving ₹11,718 crore (Rs 5,427 crore was for the Census on Digital Mapping & Planning). Mr Ashwini Vaishnaw confirmed the decision and emphasised the enormity of the Census. Census 2027 will represent the 16th National Count for India, and is the eighth count since Indian Independence. Mr Vaishnaw further highlighted that India has been collecting Census records for all Indian inhabitants for over 150 years.
The Government has confirmed the reference date for Census 2027 will be at midnight on March 1, 2027. Officials from Census also pointed out the important part the Census plays in providing data to assist in the welfare of India’s citizens through Planning and Policy Making and Overall Program Design. The Census will capture detailed Housing, Basic Amenities, Migration, Education and Workforce Participation of Indian citizens. Therefore, the various Ministries involved will receive detailed and machine-readable data tables for each of the programmes they implement or support for targeted Populations.
Census Structure and Digital Architecture
The Government of India will conduct a Digital Census in India and will be undertaken over two phases, The first phase of this will take place from April to September 2026 to perform household listing. Phase II will begin in February 2027 which will consist of the population enumeration and will occur; however, certain areas of the country (Ladakh, Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand) will complete enumeration before February 2027 due to whether issues.
The Centre will implement the first digital-only census in the country through the use of mobile applications (Android and iOS). Furthermore, all field activity will be managed/controlled by the Census Management and Monitoring System. Included in the toolkit will be a Houselisting Block Creator for mapping purposes. The Census will use a self-enumeration option for citizens to use as well. Lastly, authorities believe that moving to a digital platform better aligned with security standards as set forth in the DPDP Act.
Massive Workforce and Caste Enumeration
Digital Census 2027 India- The Census will include 30 lakh field staff—teachers enumerators—besides extra state-appointed officers for supervision. The Government anticipates 1.02 crores men-days of jobs, together with 18,600 Project Technical Staff supporting digital activities. The same goes for Caste Enumeration during Census 2027 per Cabinet Mo. Dated – 2025/04. By using electronic capture, Agencies will produce more accurate results that will increase welfare planning through the use of data. There will Public Awareness Campaigns organized throughout the Country so that there is full participation and a successful field operation.
