Massive Tri-Service Military Drill Leaves Pakistan on Edge
Exercise Trishul has left Pakistan in panic as the Indian Armed Forces prepare for a massive tri-service military drill near the western frontier. The exercise is such a demonstration of activity and strength that Islamabad has restricted multiple flights in central and southern Pakistan because of it. This restriction by Pakistan illustrates the increased nervousness as India demonstrates its unparalleled military capability, and subsequently, the need to be on heightened alert.

Pakistan Shuts Airspace as Exercise Trishul Begins
On October 28-29, 2023, Pakistan’s NOTAM (Notice to Airmen) blocked airspace in significant areas of central and southern Pakistan with little reason. However, defense analysts suspect Islamabad made this decision due to India’s recently announced Exercise Trishul, acting swiftly to enhance its defense security.
The NOTAM areas covered are located in proximity to the areas of anticipated operational areas by India’s military. This exercise is intended to demonstrate the combined strike capability of the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force in land, air, and sea. Clearly, this demonstrates India’s ability to operate in a multi-domain operation construct.
Large-Scale Exercise Trishul
According to defence expert Damien Symon, satellite imagery demonstrates the magnitude of exercise Trishul. The exercise will take place over an area of 28,000 square feet and across a large expanse. Analysts suggest that Trishul is one of the biggest military exercises undertaken in India for nearly a decade.
The posture and the size communicate an unmistakable message. India isn’t just communicating deterrent capability—India itself is a platform for communicating deterrence in its own right. Exercise Trishul demonstrates India’s capability to strike with intent anywhere and at any time. The operational reach of the country will communicate both intent and capability.
India Demonstrates Integration and Self-reliance
The Defence Ministry has indicated that the exercise will showcase tri-service integration and operational synergy, which will also showcase increased self-reliance in defence technology. Southern Command will lead this exercise with the demonstration of amphibious attacks along the Saurashtra coastline.
The forces will further demonstrate offensive operations in the Gulf of Kutch and the Desert. Exercise Trishul will represent combined exercises and will demonstrate coordination between the Army, Navy, and Air Force. These exercises have attributes resembling operations, demonstrating a readiness for combat in wars of the future.
Sir Creek: The Volatile Flashpoint
Pakistan is understandably anxious about the exercise because it is taking place near Sir Creek. The 96-kilometre swampy creek is the boundary for Gujarat and Sindh, while ownership of this challenging geographical region also implies control of waterways within the region.
“Intelligence inputs suggest an uptick in Pakistan’s hereto presence at Sir Creek.” Whereupon, the expressed intention led to the warning by Minister of Defence Rajnath Singh during the recent Dussehra festivities at the Bhuj Air Force base, should Pakistan “make a misadventurous decision” against India, the retaliatory output would be so pronounced that it would “change history and geography.”

India’s Strategic Messaging
Timing Trishul is an indication of India’s outward attitude towards defence. Rajnath Singh subsequently stated that India never goes into the international waters of “gun on the head.”
Trishul is a representation of New Delhi’s willingness to take a position of defence of its interests and the maintenance of peace in the region. It conveys India’s increasing defence capability and commitment to peace by strength. Lest we forget, at the initiation of exercises, Pakistan’s uncomfortable silence is a rather definitive message to read between the lines regarding strengthening India’s strategic position.
