
G20 Initiatives by PM Modi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi used the opening session of the G20 Summit in Johannesburg to advocate for a reset of the global development agenda. He urged global leaders to adopt an agenda that relies on common civilizational values and is inclusive and sustainable. He stated that given this was Africa’s chance to host the summit, it was time to act together.
A Re-examination of the Global Development Agenda
Modi said that we need to take the time to rethink the accepted conventional parameters of development. He emphasized the principle that development has to be fair, equitable, and sustainable at a global level. He said that India’s philosophy of Integral Humanism provided a framework that mediates between growth and human concerns. Modi claimed that today’s global challenges require united action and collaboration.
Proposal 1: Development of a G20 Global Traditional Knowledge Repository
Modi proposed the establishment of a Global Traditional Knowledge Repository alongside the G20. Modi described India’s tremendous heritage in traditional medicine, wellness, and ecosystem living.
The proposed repository would map out indigenous systems of medication, cultural practices and models for sustainable living. G20 Initiatives by PM Modi, Modi stated that this type of repository would enhance and support global primary healthcare, aid research and documentation and protection of valuable indigenous knowledge.
He framed the repository and its discussions as ways of contributing to preventive health and to the global wellness ecosystem.
Proposal 2: G20 initiative to address drug-terror nexus
During his speeches, Modi warned the leaders that drugs are a growing threat especially opioids, and especially dangerous synthetic opioids like fentanyl. He argued that we must understand that the drug economy is continuing to drive terrorism, violence, and instability.
As such, he called for some type of coordinated G20 initiative to respond to the “wretched drug-terror economy”. This initiative would entail new levels of joint intelligence, increased tracking and control of finances and organized enforcement around the globe. Modi insisted, that we should act quickly before the drug-terror nexus extends further.
Proposal 3: G20 – Africa Skills Multiplier Initiative
Reminding the audience of India’s long standing support of Africa, he said Africa’s elevation and elevation for the world’s prosperity was key. He said that, under India’s G20 presidency, the African Union was allowed permanent guest membership in the grouping.
He suggested a G20 – Africa Skills Multiplier Initiative that would develop one million certified trainers in Africa over the next 10 years. stated that it would build stronger industries in Africa, make for youth employment, and enhance South-South collaboration.
Proposal 4: G20 Global Healthcare Response Team
Modi suggested that the G20 create a medical rapid-response team. The suggested G20 Global Healthcare Response Team would include practitioners from all G20 countries. The team could be deployed during health emergencies, including natural disasters and epidemics. Modi remarked that collective preparedness would ultimately save lives and improve recovery. He admitted that global health security was a responsibility for everyone.
Context of the Summit and Participation
At the Naser Expo Centre in Johannesburg, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa welcomed Modi. Leaders and representatives from 42 countries and organizations attended the summit. US President Donald Trump boycotted the summit over some controversial allegations about South Africa. A few of the focus areas for South Africa’s G20 presidency included disaster resilience, debt sustainability, energy transition and critical minerals. Modi’s proposals aligned with these South African priorities for global cooperation.
