Israel–Gaza News Today | Senior representatives of US President Donald Trump, Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff, have traveled to Egypt to chair ceasefire talks in a bid to end the Gaza war, the White House confirmed on Saturday.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed hope that the latest round of diplomacy will return all of the remaining hostages home in a matter of days, reported The Guardian.
The Israeli Defence Forces (IDF), meanwhile, announced a significant change of military strategy. The army said it would shift to a defensive posture with operations only within the Gaza Strip, closing active operations to take over Gaza City, reported Reuters.
This announcement coincided with the IDF escorting a group of international journalists through parts of Gaza City. The guided media tour offered a rare, controlled look at the devastation that has defined months of Israeli offensives targeting Hamas strongholds.https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/world/middle-east/gaza-peace-plan-trump-warns-hamas-of-complete-obliteration-asserts-netanyahu-on-board/articleshow/1243212
Trump Pushes for Fast Agreement
Following Hamas announcement that it agreed to aspects of Trump’s offer of a peace plan, the U.S. President threatened Hamas to “move quickly.” In a statement on Truth Social, Trump noted, “Hamas must move fast, or all bets will be off.”
Trump further added, “I will not stand for delays or any result where Gaza once again threatens. Let’s get this done — fast.
Hamas reported that it had agreed to give up control of Gaza and free all the remaining hostages, but added that there are still some details in the peace plan which need additional internal deliberations among the Palestinian factions.
In advance, Israel indicated that it had approved Trump’s proposal, aimed at creating a phased ceasefire process that would ultimately see administrative control in Gaza transferred.
A Strategic Pause in Fighting
The IDF decision to suspend offensive activities follows closely Trump’s call to “stop bombing Gaza immediately” to speed up hostage talks.
The ceasefire momentum represents one of the strongest breakthroughs since the war broke out again following Hamas’s October 7 attacks. Trump, who has prioritized ending the war as a top foreign policy objective, is said to be eager to negotiate peace before the war’s second anniversary.
Diplomats consider the recent Cairo negotiations as a decisive test for both the parties. Trump’s representatives insist on quick implementation, but uncertainty exists about how Hamas and Israel will make their way through open-ended territorial and governance problems.
