India AI Impact Summit chaos underscored the sharp contrast between global ambition and operational execution in New Delhi. One of the biggest Artificial Intelligence Summits in the world was hosted by India. Various expectations were leading up to the AI Impact Summit, which transcended just an event in New Delhi. The summit itself had promised both scale as well as symbolism with thousands of leaders and executives from all over the globe attending in large numbers; however, before long, the excitement generated was overtaken by the disorderly conduct of individuals who were trying to get into or out of New Delhi due to the traffic gridlock and inability to get through the security checkpoints inside the venue for long periods of time.

After opening day, countless complaints emerged across social media. Hundreds of founders waited several hours and were then expelled from their respective facilities on short notice. Many founders claimed that they had items stolen from within secured areas. Many other issues were reported regarding food and drink options. Others found payment venues to be accepting cash only, which created an inconvenience for many international participants. Many speakers did not receive confirmations from the venue until late into the event.
The lack of communication amongst all participants confused the venue, and one founder stated that the closure of booths hinders accessibility. Another founder reported that the evacuation occurred before addressing the Prime Minister. Subsequently, the Indian Minister for IT publicly acknowledged the problems that occurred and apologised for “any issues or inconveniences”. He explained that a war room was created on-site to deal with any issues that arose. “Approximately 70,000 attendees participated in the summit, and we would agree that the organisation of the event was very slow.” Some sessions provided positive experiences; however, the lack of operational efficiency overshadowed stories related to this first day.
Big Tech enthusiasm endures despite visible disorder
While this happened, various global technology giants praised India’s potential for AI. The executives pointed toward the scale of talent and the depth of the marketplace. According to Sam Altman of OpenAI, “The energy and enthusiasm in India right now has really been something to see.” Throughout the week, companies formed new partnerships and announced new investments. For example, OpenAI is now the anchor client for Tata’s data centre. Another example is Google, which announced collaborations in research and education with Indian universities.
So, despite numerous logistical challenges, the level of ambition remained unaffected; the Government of India projected an AI investment goal of 200 billion U.S. dollars; Indian officials positioned India as a global leader of AI. Even viral moments did not have a negative effect on interest in the summit, which had participants from over one hundred countries. Therefore, there was a competition between substance and substance for attention at the summit.
According to analysts, there was a pronounced contrast between vision and reality at the summit; however, there is still strong confidence in India’s promise with respect to AI. Given the inadequacies of the basic structure, there is an urgent need to correct them.
