Technology and diplomacy are undergoing a process of big change. New Delhi will be the focal point of this convergence of technology and diplomacy. As the world offers increased attention to India’s expansion of artificial intelligence technology, the India AI Impact Summit will occur with unprecedented amounts of international participation. India is promoting artificial intelligence as an empowerment in terms of development. The confidence in the india’s digital public infrastructure at this summit is reflected in the message being sent by officials, who are describing this gathering as as8800 globally consequential. Importantly, it is also the first such summit hosted within the Global South.
Hosted across high-profile national venues, the summit includes the prime minister’s opening of the India AI Impact Expo, pavilions from multiple countries and displays of applied artificial intelligence innovations and an agenda focusing on inclusion, scale and real-world deployment of artificial intelligence.
India aims to redefine/reshape conversations related to artificial intelligence internationally, while also focusing more human-centred, as opposed to regulatory concerns. As the event takes place and leaders arrive, engagement continues to build with increasing momentum for leaders to partake in intensive engagement at this event.
India AI summit draws global leaders and tech giants
More than twenty heads of state will be present for the summit at the start of it at India’s invitation. There will delegation from Europe, Latin America, Africa and Asia in attendance. Senior officials from 45+ countries will be represented at the summit. There are several prominent technology executives and researchers attending the summit to include Sundar Pichai (CEO, Google) and Sam Altman (CEO, OpenAI).
Also participating will be Dario Amodei (CEO, Anthropic AI) and Demis Hassabis (CEO, DeepMind). Companies at the summit include Microsoft, Google, Qualcomm and some conglomerates from India. PM Modi has been having several meetings with CEOs privately. Officials expect to see significant investment commitments as a result of the meeting.
There have been three meetings previously focused on artificial intelligence with the last two meetings taking place in Europe and Asia. India is intentionally making a shift in focus for this Ai summit; their focus will be on the developmental outcome of AI.
A senior official indicated, “India has always been the champion of the developing economy’s voice in the digital policy forums; this summit will push for equitable access to AI resources and for equitable rule-making.” During the discussions the week of the summit there will be 3 thematic pillars. The thematic pillars are People, Planet and Progress.
Expo, Policy Dialogue, and Strategic Signalling
Exhibiting a very large area with many startup companies demonstrating their currently deployed technologies, together with huge numbers of likely attendees. An expected two (2) lakh visitors or more than 200,000 people projected to attend. Hackathons and innovation challenges become new ways of engaging the public. Bilateral meetings occur along with multilateral discussions on public policy. France and Brazil will also have parallel relationships with India.
The UN Secretary-General is also participating in the summit. Some speakers provoke political debate in their home country, with opposition leaders questioning the rationale for some attendees publicly. Officials refused to provide clarification of roles for individual attendees. Despite high levels of controversy, work is continuing to move forward on a large scale. The summit will end with highest-levels of OECD member countries agreeing on home country public policy coordination. India provides global leadership through participation and implementation.
