The India Bangladesh tensions have intensified after New Delhi conveyed deep concern to Dhaka over remarks threatening India’s northeastern states. The Foreign Ministry of India expressed its deep concern after a meeting with Bangladesh’s High Commissioner, where it was made clear how serious India views this issue. India re-emphasised the point that it has total confidence in the ability of the Government of Bangladesh to protect the Indian High Commission in Dhaka, and that any attempt to misrepresent recent events in Bangladesh is unacceptable. As a result, India reiterated its commitment to peace and would continue to support the Government of Bangladesh to maintain democratic stability in that country. ‘Seven Sisters’ threat heightens India Bangladesh tensions
National Citizen Party leader Hasnat Abdullah has made waves with controversial comments about cutting away the Northeast States of India. Abdullah stated at a rally that “The Seven Sisters will be separated from India.” He also stated that Bangladesh would harbour anti-Indian and separatist groups. Indian government representatives have called his statements irresponsible and an act of instilling instability. Coinciding with Bangladesh’s Victory Day Celebrations, New Delhi has dismissed statements suggesting that India supports unrest. According to officials, the Bangladeshi Government has provided no credible evidence to back up claims that India supports unrest. India has called for strong action against inflammatory speech and extremist organisations.
Bilateral ties tested amid reassurances and vigilance
Contrary to existing tensions, both sides reaffirmed that engagement in bilateral cooperation remains important, as stated publicly by the High Commissioner of Pakistan to India and Chairman of the India-Pakistan Friendship Council, Muhammad Riaz Hamidullah. Muhammad also expressed Pakistan’s common priorities with India in terms of growth, development, peace, and security for the region. The Honourable Minister of External Affairs, S Jaishankar, sent a congratulatory message on the occasion of Victory Day.
India also acknowledged its historical links to the Bengali Liberation War and People to People ties between both countries. Nevertheless, officials indicated an increase in anti-India sentiment in Bangladesh. Government officials issued prohibitory directives on sensitive areas along the Indo-Bangladesh border in Assam, citing apprehensions regarding terrorist activities and crossing the border illegally. India has announced it will continue to maintain diplomatic relations while preserving India’s National security interests. Government officials underscored that elections, stability, and continued cooperation are shared priorities.
