In the midst of persistent trade tensions between New Delhi and Washington, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday met US Ambassador-designate Sergio Gor at his residence in New Delhi. The meeting comes as both nations work to stabilize their evolving India–US Strategic Partnership amid one of their most serious tariff disputes in recent history.
PM Modi, on a post on X, stated that he was “glad to receive Mr. Sergio Gor” and was confident that Gor’s term would “further strengthen the India–US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership.” Gor subsequently reposted the message and thanked Modi for the warm welcome.
At the meeting, the two leaders addressed priority areas of cooperation — defense, trade, strategic minerals, and emerging technologies. Gor observed that the talks highlighted the two countries’ mutual interest in guaranteeing supply chain resilience and boosting technological cooperation.
Gor Highlights Strong Leadership and Bilateral Trust
“The US values its relationship with India, and under the strong leadership of President Donald J. Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Gor expressed optimism about the future of bilateral ties.
The US envoy-designate also revealed that President Trump and PM Modi had an “incredible phone call” before his departure, reaffirming the personal rapport between the two leaders.
Earlier during the day, Gor had called on External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, and Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, where the strategic depth and global implications of the India–US relationship discussed.
The talks were held amidst ongoing tensions in bilateral ties following the Trump administration doubling tariffs on Indian imports to 50 percent, including an additional 25 percent duty on Russian-origin crude oil — a step India has labeled “unfair and unreasonable.”
For all the trade issues and visa policy rows, the two sides have revisited negotiations to seal a new India–US trade agreement, reflecting cautious but promising momentum in ties.
Gor, a close Trump aide and former White House staff director, named US Ambassador to India in August and confirmed by the US Senate this week.
With both countries wanting to enhance cooperation on energy, technology, and defence, analysts believe Gor’s visit represents a reset period in India–US diplomacy, one that balances hard bargains with new strategic trust. https://www.msn.com/en-in/news/india/amid-tense-tariff-talks-pm-modi-meets-us-ambassador-designate-to-india/ar-AA1OhDsi?ocid=BingNewsSerp
