Iran has retaliated against US-Israel military operations that had targeted its leadership and military facility with missile and drone attacks on several of the Gulf States, such as the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar, Jordan, and Kuwait, resulting in massive explosions, closed airports, and widespread panic for civilians.
Iran claims its strikes were directed towards US military bases but there were numerous explosions and falling debris from these strikes have occurred in the civilian area including Dubai.
Explosions rock Dubai as drones spotted near Burj Khalifa
Residents in Dubai have reportedly heard loud explosions and seen the drone activity around the Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building.
“People are hearing and seeing loud interceptions and explosions in the air, a hotel on Palm Jumeirah has been hit”) and fires are breaking out.
Residents of Dubai were shocked by the attacks. Dubai is known as one of the safest cities in the world and has not been involved in with regional conflict before.
Unlike Israel, there is no air-raid shelter infrastructure in Dubai. Many residents received no warning before the explosions occurred, forcing them to stay at home and store until they got hit.
Airports were closed and all flights across the region were suspended.
Missile strikes have created massive disruptions throughout the world’s aviation system.
All flights at Dubai International Airport, which is one of the busiest airports in the world, have been suspended indefinitely. Passengers were advised not to go to the airport but to contact the airlines for more information.
Both Israel, Qatar and the UAE announced that they had closed airspace to flights within their boundaries. Flights heading to cities, such as Tel Aviv, were ordered to change course midair.
These closures have had a significant negative impact on travel throughout the region, which is one of the most important aviation hubs in the world.
US military presence becomes primary target
Iran stated that the primary target of its attacks are US military installations, including bases for the US Naval Fifth Fleet in Bahrain.
The US military buildup in the Gulf is a direct response to a deteriorating situation. The US is on high alert for further escalation in the area.
The Gulf states, where U.S. troops are stationed, have now become front-line states.
Europe reacts cautiously, questions legality of strikes
The various European governments have all reacted with caution.
Today, a German and French Leader held an emergency summit and urged all parties to return to diplomacy. Both expressed concerns for regional stability.
When contacted by press, officials acknowledged their concerns about legality and lack of a clear UN Resolution for military action. Some officials expressed doubt about the legality of the military response.
Risk of Escalating Conflict
Analysts warn that the scope of conflict could extend dramatically.
The US has publicly stated a desire to see regime change in Iran and Iran continues to threaten retaliation for any actions taken against them.
Analysts agree that even if the Iranian regime is weakened, the military and political structure in Iran will remain intact, creating an environment of continued instability and conflict.
In The Gulf Region, Civilians Are Living in Fear
For the Gulf States today, each of their residents shares the same reality of fear, uncertainty and disruption; as this entire region, which is among the safest and most economically secure areas on earth, is suddenly included in the front lines of a war.
