JNU protest slogans controversy, “Delhi Police was requested by Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) for police action after students protested Mr Modi and Mr Shah through strong slogans and the University sent Delhi Police an FIR request. Officials stated that the slogans exceeded an acceptable level of dissent,” said the JNU Students Union (JNUSU) on January 5th. The event was held on January 5th to commemorate the 6th anniversary of the violence that occurred on campus in 2020.
The gathering held in response to the Supreme Court’s rejection of bail requests made by accused persons Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam”. “Initially the gathering said to peaceful by Security officials; subsequently the Crowd’s Mood changed following the Supreme Court’s ruling and Security Officials stated that certain individuals in the Crowd raising inflammatory slogans”.
University Warns of Suspension and Permanent Debarment
Following the distribution of a recorded incident on social media depicting students engaging in perceived hate speech, the administration at JNU has issued an official warning. Student found guilty of these actions may face suspension, expulsion or permanent removal from the university.
“JNU will not compromise on our commitment to maintain an orderly atmosphere on the campus,” the Institution said in a statement.
“Debate is an essential component of an effective learning environment, and College Campuses should encourage Debate, not Hostility Toward Others,” they added, JNU protest slogans controversy.
“JNU recognizes that students have the right to oppose their Government and/or University, but any opposition must be consistent with the parameters of the Constitution.”, JNU Authorities told me.
The administration also confirmed that it will not provide any reason for any student’s statements that may lead to actual physical harm or violence.
Consequently, JNU Administration will take action based on the findings of the Security Investigation Report and evidence collected by our police investigators.
Political Reactions Escalate the Row
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) condemned the chants made by crowd members of the university and stated that the chants also constituted a violation of the respect owed to an institution’s authority.
According to BJP, organisations and political groups affiliated with the university do not respect the government or its sovereignty in any manner.
In response to this alleged disturbance, BJP called for strict measures against any individual associated with this event.
Members of the Congress Party condemned BJP’s comments politically motivated and were also selective in their outrage, primarily when directed toward themselves and other university groups.
Several representatives from JNU defended the rhythm, chanting and slogans associated with the university crowd as legitimate ideological expressions.
The Vice Chancellor and administration of JNU have stated they will protect free speech in accordance with the laws of India. However, they will not tolerate any disruption of the school environment, regardless of the reason behind it.
JNU’s administrators declared that JNU exists to protect the safety of its campus space through maintaining strong policies regarding campus safety.
