Karnataka RSS Rules: Cabinet Approves New Restrictions on Public Activities

The Karnataka cabinet has passed proposed rules about the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) in public places, specifically on government land. The proposed rules will regulate public gatherings, meetings, marches, and events without permission. IT Minister Priyank Kharge said groups would have to seek permission before organizing any events on public roads and government property.
Karnataka Cabinet Approves New Restrictions
Kharge told reporters that their restriction emerged out of concern for RSS activity in general public institutions, including schools, colleges, and universities. Officials will draft the new rules in line with consistent guidelines from the home, law, and education departments. The government will implement these restrictions within a period of two or three days to ensure the revisions are all within the limits of the Constitution. Priyank Kharge refers to the early basis of the ban on the Karnataka RSS.
Kharge mentioned new regulations that acknowledged the government cannot prohibit any organization from doing something, but it can regulate their activities in public space. He said so by saying that no organization is permitted to do anything without some allowed permission. Kharge stated, “From now on, you cannot do whatever you want to do in public space, or in the roadways.”
Implementation of the Rules
The government will pass rules to give privileges under the new Karnataka RSS rules. Stick marches or other similar gatherings will have stricter rules, and the government will do more scrutiny on each application to ensure public safety.
Political and Social Implications of the Karnataka RSS Rules
The Congress government argues that the initiative brings back impartiality and limits any potential misuse of state property. The oppositional side says the Karnataka RSS law can limit democratic gatherings. The state government states this is simply to limit democratic gathering, to serve public welfare, and an organization, not a political association.
The new Karnataka RSS rules are a tipping point to limit public protests throughout the state, and responsibility and constitutionalism.
