Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to attend the G20 Summit in Johannesburg from November 21-23. India views this summit as another chance to influence global conversations on growth, security and technology. This will be the fourth consecutive G20 Summit hosted in the Global South.
India enumerates summit priorities
Modi will speak in all three formal sessions. He aims to summarise India’s approach to inclusive development, global security and emerging technologies. The Ministry of External Affairs noted he would state India’s push for equitable global systems and greater representation by developing countries.
Focus on inclusive and sustainable economic growth
Modi will speak at the session focussing on inclusive and sustainable economic growth. He will address trade reform, fair financing and responsible debt. India will advocate for equitable market access and greater assistance for developing countries. Modi is expected to argue that the Global South requires greater economic resilience.
Climate, disasters, and just energy transitions will feature most prominently in second G20 session
The second session will be focused on resilience. Modi will continue his appeal for global collaboration to promote disaster risk reduction and climate adaptation. He will underscore the urgent demand for just energy transitions. Furthermore, he may caution that climate-related hazards now threaten global security. This underscores India’s long-held insistence of climate responsibilities being afforded on a balanced basis.
Technology, critical minerals, and future jobs in final G20 session
The final G20 session will be dedicated to discussions focused around critical minerals, decent work, and AI. Modi will call for the responsible development of AI systems and stable supply chains for critical minerals. India will also emphasize the need for technology transfers to occur transparently, and in an ethically digital manner. He will even back frameworks which support countries in obtaining jobs that are fit for the future.
Strong push against terrorism likely
India will continue its efforts to encourage the G20 in advocating a stronger position on terrorism. Modi has stated time & again that terrorism is posing societal instability and a deterrent against development for a number of years now. He will urge the G20 to take consolidated action against those countries who support and/or fund terrorist networks. India will also argue for better tracking of financial records of terror funding.
Bilateral meetings and IBSA engagements on the agenda
Modi will hold bilateral meetings with numerous world leaders during the summit, and he will also take part in the India-Brazil-South Africa (IBSA) meeting convened by South Africa. This will contribute to India’s strengthening ties with key global South partners.
