In a milestone development for India-UK relations, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and British PM Keir Starmer on Thursday signed a package of agreements to boost defence cooperation, trade, education, and technology. The Mumbai summit is Starmer’s first visit to India since becoming the PM and comes at a time of global instability that was characterized by the Ukraine war, the Israel-Hamas war, and emerging Indo-Pacific dynamics.
Defence Cooperation Takes a Boost
The most significant outcome of the summit was a military training agreement pursuant to which Indian Air Force flying instructors will instruct the Royal Air Force in the UK. The agreement aims to enhance the defence capability of both countries and strengthen ties through close strategic training relationships.
They also announced government-to-government supply of Indian-made Lightweight Multirole Missile (LMM) systems to India, which will enhance the air defence capabilities of the country. They further announced that they were eager to sign an India-UK Inter-Governmental Agreement (IGA) for development of maritime electric propulsion systems for the Indian Navy, reflecting enhanced defence technology cooperation.
Modi said, “We are going to shift towards defence co-production, marrying our defence industries, and blending the UK’s technological knowhow with India’s manufacturing strength.”
Trade, Technology, and Economic Partnerships
Prime Minister Starmer labeled India “a global player” and repeated the UK’s commitment to deepen trade relations. He led the biggest-ever UK trade delegation ever — a 126-strong team of some of the UK’s top business leaders, entrepreneurs, and thinkers. The delegation represents increasing economic interaction between the two nations following the July trade deal.
Starmer further said, “We want to be partners. Today’s visit is about doubling down on the potential of our trade agreement to benefit both countries.”
The meeting also talked about technology cooperation in AI, cutting-edge communications, and defense systems as part of the broader India-UK Vision 2035 partnership. Modi mentioned fields of cooperation in clean energy, strategic minerals, and naval security, an attempt to take the economic diplomacy to the strategic level.
Education and Cultural Collaboration
One of the historic declarations made during the meet was that nine British universities will establish campuses in India and expand access to higher education and enhance cultural exchanges. Starmer vowed that all major British universities will have bases in India in the future to meet growing demand for quality education.
Modi said the Southampton University Gurugram campus is already operational and that more universities are expected to join, describing this initiative as a benchmark in India-UK relations.
Geopolitical Significance and Global Impact
The two leaders discussed major international issues, from the Israel-Hamas conflict to the Ukraine situation, again vowing to achieve peace through dialogue and diplomacy. Modi called the partnership “a foundation for global stability and economic progress,” while Starmer called it “a special relationship that will play a key role in the Indo-Pacific and beyond.”.
The implications of the Modi-Starmer meeting point toward an intensification of India-UK relations in defense, commerce, education, and technology on a strategic level. As the two nations deepen collaboration, they will position their alliance to influence not only bilateral relationships but also international stability at large.
