The NDA has reached a consensus on its power-sharing formula for the next Bihar government following its dominant performance in the recently conducted Bihar Assembly election, with the BJP cornering the lion’s share of the cabinet berths while retaining Nitish Kumar as the Chief Minister. As per the senior leaders involved in the discussion.
The agreement came after a high-level meeting chaired by Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
Break-up of Cabinet Berths
Under the deal, the BJP will get about 15–16 ministerial berths, matching its sterling performance in the recent elections, JD(U) is likely to get about 14 berths and Nitish Kumar retains the top post.
Chirag Paswan’s LJP(RV) that came through with 19 seats is likely to secure three cabinet berths. Jitan Ram Manjhi’s HAMS (five seats) and Upendra Kushwaha’s Rashtriya Lok Morcha (four seats) could get one berth each.
Leaders say the NDA had a simple ratio: one ministerial post for about every six MLAs.
Oath Taking Likely on November 19 or 20
The oath-taking is expected on November 19 or 20, but the final date will be decided after internal consultations to choose an “auspicious” day. NDA MLAs will hold a joint meeting soon to A joint meeting to formally elect its legislative leader, who will then stake a claim to form the government.
NDA Dominates Bihar
The NDA secured 202 of the 243 seats, pulling off one of its best results in Bihar. The BJP emerged as the single-largest party with 89 seats, followed by the JD(U) with 85 seats.
The LJP(RV) emerged victorious with 19 seats, while the HAMS secured 5, and the Rashtriya Lok Morcha won 4. AIMIM also managed to secure 5 seats.
In sharp contrast, the Mahagathbandhan struggled to cross 35 seats as questions began to arise within the opposition on leadership, strategy and the Election Commission’s handling of the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls.
NDA Partners Reiterate Alliance
Chirag Paswan met Nitish Kumar soon after the results and dismissed the talk of friction within the alliance, saying both actively supported each other during the campaign. Nitish Kumar, 75 shortly, defied health concerns to continue an aggressive campaign.
With the cabinet formula decided and oath ceremony just days away, NDA is girding up a government that reflects its sweeping mandate and expanding influence in Bihar politics.
