The Ladakh police have alleged a direct Pakistan connection to this week’s violent clashes in Leh, claiming that a recently arrested “person of interest” from Pakistan was in touch with climate activist Sonam Wangchuk and sent reports about his activities across the border.
Director General of Police (DGP) S. D. Jamwal made the revelation on Saturday, a day after authorities detained Wangchuk under National Security Act (NSA) and moved him to Jodhpur jail.
If you want, I can also give you a few more concise, punchy variations that work well for news headlines.. Jamwal accused “so-called environmental activists” and groups with “questionable credibility” of hijacking Ladakh’s demand for statehood and constitutional safeguards under the Sixth Schedule.
“Reports Sent to Pakistan“
“We arrested a Pakistani POI who was associated with Wangchuk and was reporting about him. We have records of this,” Jamwal told reporters. He added that Wangchuk’s past participation in an event linked to Pakistan’s Dawn newspaper, followed by visits to Bangladesh, “puts a big question mark on him.”
Jamwal also said that central agencies are probing possible FCRA violations and foreign funding linked to Wangchuk’s activism.
Violence “Unprecedented in Ladakh’s History”
On September 24, protests around Wangchuk’s hunger strike spiraled into violent clashes. According to police, 5,000–6,000 people gathered at the site, with a section breaking away to attack government offices and political party headquarters.
Buildings were set on fire, and CRPF and police personnel were assaulted. Four women police officers were trapped inside a burning building, while one CRPF soldier sustained a serious spinal injury.
“To stop this massive attack, there was self-defence firing. Unfortunately, four people died,” Jamwal said.
In total, four civilians were killed, more than 80 injured, and 32 severely wounded, including seven in critical condition. At least 17 CRPF personnel and 15 police officers were also hurt. Jamwal confirmed that several Nepalese nationals were among those injured.
Political Backdrop
The clashes come amid heightened tensions over Ladakh’s long-pending demands for statehood and Sixth Schedule safeguards. Two key groups — the Leh Apex Body and the Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA) — have been negotiating with the Centre through a High-Power Committee.
Jamwal alleged that Wangchuk and outside groups “derailed” this process. “Some so-called environmental activists, whose credibility is questionable, tried to hijack the platform,” he said.
