
Explosion in Lviv caused by Russian Oreshnik Ballistic Missile fired into Ukraine.
Russia Oreshnik missile attack Ukraine, Friday, Ukrainian officials reported that explosions resulted from a Russian Oreshnik ballistic missile launching into Ukraine. This is the second time this missile has been used by Russia since beginning full-scale operations in Ukraine in 2022. The first use was November 2024 when a Russian Oreshnik ballistic missile hit a vacant manufacturing facility located within Dnipro.
The Ukrainian government expressed concern that Russia was sending a warning signal to Western countries regarding their support for Ukraine and to deter further assistance to Ukraine.
Features and Range of the Oreshnik
Oreshnik is a Medium Range Ballistic Missile that can travel anywhere from between 600 – 1,000 miles. The U.S. Government classifies the Oreshnik as an Intermediate Range Ballistic Missile capable of being used at distances higher than 3,000 miles. In addition, the Oreshnik’s re-entry vehicle can contain as many as 6 MIRVs (Multiple Independently Targetable Re-entry Vehicles). The Oreshnik travels towards its target at speeds close to 8000 mph and reaches outside of earth’s atmosphere before re-entering into our atmosphere. The Oreshnik’s design is largely based on previous RS-26 Rubezh concepts; however, this version has a very small amount of modernized upgrades.
Threat to Europe and Why the Launch Matters
Russia allegedly test-fired an intercontinental ballistic missile capable of carrying nuclear weapons within 100 miles of the Polish border and within an hour of the country. Ukrainian officials have indicated to European nations that the level of threat from Russia has increased if it continues performing missile tests. European Union officials believe that the launch intended to instill fear in both the United States and Europe.
Moscow asserts that its missile test was in retaliation to an alleged Ukrainian missile attack on President Putin’s residence. According to American intelligence, no such attack made by Ukraine. Analysts believe this act intended to demonstrate to the world Russia’s greater arsenal, especially during times of international distress.
