Sonam Wangchuk, the leader of the Ladakh protest movement, cautioned that citizens are becoming more interested in outstanding applications for constitutional security and self-governance in the union territory. He cautioned that “things can get out of hand” if the government failed to address people’s desires in time.

Increased Call for Sixth Schedule and Autonomy for Ladakh
Union Goverment made Ladakh an Union Territory in 2019. Sonam Wangchuk and the locals have been demanding Sixth Schedule protection. Sixth schedule gives greater authority in administration, land ownership, and natural resource management. The protesters want the protection extended to preserve Ladakh’s cultural heritage, indigenous way of life, and balance of nature.
The protest gained strength in Leh and Kargil where citizens called for stronger legal protections to guard against demographic change and unregulated development plans endangering the ecologically fragile Himalayan landscape.
Protests, Hunger Strikes, and Civic Action
Sonam Wangchuk has led and co-organized a series of fasts and demonstrations at Leh and Kargil to compel the implementation of the demands. Sit-ins, processions, and mass rallies are becoming order of the day as people demand that the government enacts constitutional safeguards and tested methods of local control.
Wangchuk has depicted the Ladakhis as holding good faith. He also stressed on rising tensions stem from the government’s failure to honor earlier commitments or set clear timelines.”
Warning of Escalating Tensions
“The Ladakhis are anxious. The situation can spiral out of control if their demands are not met,” Sonam Wangchuk said. The threat demonstrates the seriousness of the situation and the seriousness with which the natives are concerned about the future of the autonomy, culture, and nature of Ladakh.
These are not political but equally on sound ecological reasons, with the natives demanding assurances to safeguard Ladakh’s sensitive eco-system from laissez-faire industry or tourism-development.
The Way Ahead

Sonam Wangchuk and local leaders want:
Time-bound guarantee of safeguard under Sixth Schedule and constitutional guarantees to Ladakh.
Greater decentralization of power to state governments so that they can actively participate in land and resources decisions.
Judicial protection of Ladakh’s culture, demography, and ecology.
Preventive open discussion with the people of the area prior to draconian policy actions.
The observers are of the view that preemptive action needs to be taken in light of such an appeal so that escalation is avoided and social stability is ushered into Leh and Kargil.
The Sonam Wangchuk threat is aware of increasing disillusion and discontent of Ladakhis towards sovereignty, culture, and nature. Timely action of the government toward protection under Sixth Schedule, statehood to Ladakh, and local self-government reforms can ensure ease and provide development of Ladakh as a Union Territory on the path of adjustment with protection of nature.
