As a result of ongoing conflicts in foreign nations, there is now an increasing need for political coordination between parties within India. The war is now entering its fourth week and continues to create significant challenges for the Indian Government by causing disruptions in both energy and trade supply routes while also presenting operational challenges within the Strait of Hormuz. Furthermore, in response to the current geopolitical situation, Indian policymakers have been coordinating their assessments of risk in relation to the war at an increased frequency.

The Indian Government has convened a meeting for Party leaders in Parliament to take place in the very near future. There is a need for the political leaders of Parliament to come together to develop a coordinated response to the challenges posed by the war. Given recent opposition criticism directed toward the Government, the need for political engagement from political leaders has increased. Additionally, the Indian Government has been in contact with several institutions across India to further assess the impact of the war on Indian needs. Therefore, the Defence and Diplomacy leadership are currently coordinating with one another regarding their responses to the war. This meeting will facilitate greater levels of coordination amongst political leaders concerning current issues, as well as allow for consensus regarding future actions.
Govt reviews security, economy, and diplomatic strategy simultaneously
Rajnath Singh, the Minister for Defence, will most likely preside over this meeting, which will include discussions with the Minister for External Affairs, S. Jaishankar, and other senior leaders from several parties. This meeting occurs in conjunction with a recent high-level defence review attended by military and strategic leaders and prior to Prime Minister Narendra Modi having led a series of recent security discussions as a result of giving his directive to establish a dedicated coordination group to address any developing crisis-related challenges.
Unfortunately, ongoing disruptions in Hormuz will continue to adversely affect global trade and create increased uncertainty regarding the flow of energy and shipping routes throughout the world. In addition to continuing to monitor all of the vessels from India, authorities will now conduct closer monitoring of the supply chain and logistics systems. The government will also continue to carry out more detailed reviews of available fertiliser and fuel resources.
West Asia War Intensifies Political Debate and Opposition Criticism
Critics from the opposition have voiced their discontent with the government’s public comment. The timing of their comments was already considered to be to the detriment of the government and its supporters. There were allegations levelled against the Prime Minister that his comments were delayed. There were no comments that were direct issues regarding condemnation. Congress called the Prime Minister’s speech self-aggrandising politically for his own purposes. In addition, Shiv Sena leaders expressed concerns about the lack of diplomatic clarity. In relation to that assembly meeting, Rahul Gandhi will not be attending because he has previously arranged commitments outside of Delhi for that day.
Earlier in the week, there was a parliamentary address given by Prime Minister Modi. He indicated that significant efforts were being made to reduce the domestic impact. PM Modi also indicated to stop hoarding and black market practices. He provided guidance to the states in maintaining a high level of vigilance during the period of crisis. Last but not least, he also provided repetitive comments on preparedness and national unity. The government is obtaining energy from several sources. There were also assurances made by officials regarding adequate provision of fertiliser to farmers.
As such, the meeting represents both an element of urgency from a strategic perspective and a level of political tension. The West Asia war will continue to shape India’s political coordination and policy responses as economic and security risks evolve.
