The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, passed a resolution on Wednesday evening calling the car explosion that occurred near the Red Fort in Delhi on November 10 “a heinous terror incident committed by anti-national elements.” The meeting represents a shift in the government’s thinking, as it had previously only reported the blast as a car explosion, moving now to call it a terrorist act.
The resolution condemned the event as a “senseless act of violence” and directed investigative agencies to conduct the investigation “with utmost urgency and professionalism”. The cabinet directed the investigating agencies to identify the perpetrators, accomplices, and sponsors involved and to ensure that they are punished as soon as possible.
“The cabinet firmly condemns this dastardly and cowardly act leading to loss of innocent lives,” the resolution states, reiterating India’s policy of zero tolerance of any kind or manifestation of terrorism.
At the beginning of the meeting, the cabinet observed a two-minute silence in memory of those killed in the explosion, which killed more than a dozen people and injured numerous others.
Government Strengthens National Security Surveillance
The government assured that the situation has been under supervision at the highest levels, that multiple security and intelligence agencies are coordinating the investigation. Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said that the Cabinet’s resolution explicitly identified the explosion as caused by terrorists, but he was unwilling to comment on any foreign connection. When asked about Pakistan-based outfits involvement, Vaishnaw said, “The resolution has explicitly provided to mention that the blast is a reprehensible terror attack.”
He then added that further operational detail will not be provided until investigators complete their work.
The resolution also commended emergency responders, police officers, and medical personnel who displayed courage and efficiency in responding to the emergency.
PM Modi Meets Blast Victims, Promises Justice
Earlier that same day, just after returning from a visit to Bhutan, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met survivors of the Red Fort blast at Lok Nayak Jai Prakash (LNJP) Hospital. Modi spent 25 minutes at the hospital, speaking with doctors and families of the injured.
“Visited LNJP Hospital and met with persons injured in the explosion in Delhi. Wishing a speedy recovery for all, and those behind the conspiracy will be brought to justice!”, Modi said in a post on X.
Later, the Prime Minister chaired the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) for a review of the current situation and the investigation.
Terror Module Linked to Blast
The blast at the Red Fort occurred just hours after Delhi Police arrested eight suspects tied to Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) and Ansar Ghazwat-ul-Hind, both banned terrorist organizations from Pakistan, as part of a wider operation to dismantle a terror module operating in Delhi. The police seized 2,500 kilograms of ammonium nitrate, potassium chlorate, and sulphur from multiple locations in Jammu and Kashmir, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh, including from three of the suspects who were doctors.
Forensic experts are now verifying if the chemistry of the explosion matches that of the blast, or if there is any connection between the suspects and the injured victims in the hospital. The FIR filed by the police in Delhi describes the circumstances as a bomb blast.
The Cabinet reiterated its zero-tolerance approach to terrorism, committing to protect national security and safeguard every citizen from acts of terror. The seriousness of the government indicates its commitment to ensuring justice as quickly as possible, as the Union government expects the Red Fort terrorist attack to serve as a pivotal moment for India’s combat against domestic as well as cross-border terror networks.
