Russia escalated rhetoric after the Putin drone attack claim, alleging that Ukrainian forces attempted to target President Vladimir Putin’s residence during ongoing peace negotiations. The president of Russia, Vladimir Putin, stated that Ukraine failed in its attempt to launch a drone attack on his residence in Novgorod. According to Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, on Sunday morning, during the night, Ukraine attacked the Russian Federation with 91 long-range drones. All of these drones were intercepted/destroyed by Russian air defense systems before any damage was done.

Lavrov said that Ukraine’s drone attack was aimed at the residence of the President of the Russian Federation and took place during peace talks between Ukraine and Russia. He described Ukraine’s attack as an act of state terrorism that was completely irresponsible and stated that Russia will not forget about or disregard these acts while the negotiations are still ongoing. Lavrov stated that the Russian military has already located and prepared targets for retaliatory strikes against Ukraine as a response to Ukraine’s drone attack. According to Lavrov, Russia will reassess ongoing peace talks with Ukraine based on the attempted drone attack.
The Russian government has yet to confirm whether President Putin was at the Dolgiye Borody palace (the official residence of the President of Russia) at the time of this incident. The Dolgiye Borody palace is a historic and important location for every President of Russia from all time periods, including Stalin, Khrushchev, Yeltsin, and Putin.
Ukraine rejects Putin drone attack claim, warns of escalation
According to Kremlin officials, a phone conversation took place between Ukrainian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump regarding alleged drone strikes in Ukraine, as well as Russia’s concerns over the effect these strikes could potentially have on Russian national security. Russian official Yuri Ushakov stated that Russia would re-evaluate previous agreements with the United States based on the outcome of negotiations between the two countries. He further indicated that Russia had some concerns about how broad the interpretation of the terms of the Russian proposals were by Ukraine and whether such an interpretation might ultimately lead to the breakdown of any agreements made with the United States.
He also noted that the United States has been advising Ukrainian authorities to take concrete steps towards resolving the conflict through negotiations between Ukraine and Russia. Russia also stated that they would continue to cooperate with the representatives of Ukraine and would re-evaluate their current stance. Additionally, during this period, President Putin has ordered the Russian Armed Forces to increase their military operations in the southern region of Ukraine. Senior Military Commanders reported that units of the Russian Armed Forces had advanced to within 15 km of the City of Zaporyzhzhia. As a result, these actions mark a significant escalation of tensions between Russia and the United States, even while both sides have been working diplomatically toward a resolution.
Kremlin links incident to talks, signals tougher military posture
Officials have confirmed that President Putin and US President Donald Trump had a phone conversation about the situation in Ukraine regarding reported drone strikes and concerns over the impact on Russian national security. Kremlin staff member Yuri Ushakov stated that Russia would look again at existing agreements made during negotiations with the United States. Ushakov said Moscow was concerned that Ukraine may have misinterpreted any of the Russian proposal’s terms too broadly. He stated that American representatives working with Ukraine have encouraged Kyiv to take practical steps toward achieving a settlement.
Russia stated it would continue working with the Ukrainian Representatives while re-evaluating its position. At the same time, Putin has instructed the Greater Russian Armed formations to increase their military operations in the southern area of Ukraine.
