Iran protest deaths have come into focus after Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei acknowledged fatalities while blaming foreign powers for the unrest. Rising tensions began in the weeks following multiple protests across the country. As dissatisfaction with the economy grew, the protests turned from local issues into a widespread call for an end to government corruption. Initially, Iranian officials denied the extent of the violence that was occurring during the protests. With little to no comments from Iranian leaders regarding the protests, many people who were reporting in and out of the country speculated about what was really happening in Iran.

Crowds of protesters continued to gather in defiance of being brutally repressed by government forces. As security forces confronted protesters in various cities throughout Iran, the communication gap increased due to the Iranian government’s blocking access to information. International journalists were unable to get a full picture of the events occurring in Iran as well. After months of pressure, Iran’s leaders eventually spoke out publicly. In his first national address, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei delivered a strong message to the Iranian people that the government would not be intimidated by outside interference. Khamenei’s remarks changed the narrative regarding the protests; he not only acknowledged that Iran has experienced violence due to protests, but also indicated that he would hold the United States, Israel, and other Western powers responsible for the violence in Iran.
