India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio met this week in Washington, D.C., to continue building the India-US bilateral relationship after both nations reached a historic trade agreement.
The meeting occurred the day after US President Donald Trump announced the US would reduce tariffs on Indian goods from 25% down to 18% in accordance with an agreement reached with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Jaishankar said a variety of topics were specifically discussed by both ministers, including but not limited to trade, energy, nuclear cooperation, defense, technology and critical minerals. Additionally, they discussed developing formal partnerships in regards to exploration, mining, and processing of key minerals (such as lithium, cobalt, and rare earth minerals) utilized in electric vehicles, semiconductors, and clean energy.
In a post on X, Jaishankar indicated that the two countries would have prompt meetings of their various bilateral methods to support common priorities.
The United States Department of State echoed this sentiment by congratulating both Jaishankar and Rubio for finalizing a trade agreement and highlighting how the two countries will work together to create economic opportunities and increase energy security.
Enhancing Supply Chain Resiliency
Reducing reliance on specific concentrated global supply chains throughout the world was a common discussion during these sessions, as well as decreasing dependence on China. Observers noted that India’s evolving industrial infrastructure and access to minerals would provide synergy with U.S. investment and technologies.
Jaishankar pointed to some examples of how India is building its own domestic capacity and using responsible mining practices through programs like the National Mission on Critical Minerals and the Rare Earth Corridor project.
According to officials, efforts to strengthen partnerships in this area fit within a broader strategy for the U.S. to create alternative networks of supply for what has been termed by some officials as “the resources of the future”.
Foundation vs. End Point of a Trade Agreement
The recent agreement to cut tariffs has alleviated longstanding friction between the two countries regarding trade, but both sides reiterated that their relationship has to be much deeper than simply a transactional one.
According to an official from the State Department, Jaishankar and Rubio reaffirmed their commitment to expanding their cooperation through the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue, as well as the value placed on having a strong and stable Indo-Pacific region.
Although India is prioritising maintaining an independent approach, the conversations during the course of discussions have demonstrated a growing alignment between the two nations on matters concerning regional security and the strength of their economies.

Broadening of international relations
Jaishankar will attend the Ministerial Conference of Critical Minerals, organised by Rubio and other participants, as well as hold meetings with leading US officials, from February 2nd to 4th. Amongst the topics addressed will be trade, investment, and energy technology for long-term partnership.
According to Analysts, Jaishankar’s visit signifies a gradual ‘reset’ in terms of the India US relationship, following moths of tariff disagreements and disruptions in supply chain.
What does this mean for the future
The Jaishankar Rubio meeting represents the transition from short-term negotiations toward long-term, aerated situations. With critical minerals becoming more recognized as a strategic asset for cooperation by the US and India, they aim to position themselves as natural partners with one another in supporting the upcoming stage of global economic reform.
If the agreements reached at the Washington talks are completed, they will change the global supply chain environment and further cement their position as one of the world’s key strategic relationships.
