India will be hosting a major diplomatic moment very soon. All eyes are starting to be focused on how India is leading the world in technology and innovation. Artificial Intelligence is now on everyone’s mind in determining how countries will grow and meet social needs. With this as a backdrop, India is preparing to intervene on the global stage with a very thoughtful impact and approach.

The upcoming India-AI Impact Summit has importance in both a strategic and symbolic way. It is also an announcement of India’s intention to use technology to meet the needs of developing economies. It is important to note that this will now be how we view AI, not just as something that is regulated or a risk, but as an enabler.
The summit will occur at the same time, as there continues to be a significant gap in access to technology throughout the world. Because of this, other emerging economies around the world will relate to how India approaches AI.
India has shown that they want to make this happen on a much larger scale than ever before with other countries. The gathering of heads of state, thought leaders, and other key individuals showcases India’s ability to lead in global governance.
Significantly, it highlights the Global South perspective on technology and innovation. This opportunity will allow New Delhi to showcase its hosting philosophy, which it believes can be delivered through AI, and create an expectation of how AI will be defined.
Development-Centric Vision Anchors The Summit Agenda
From February 16 to 20 in New Delhi, a series of high-profile events will be taking place to discuss an international cooperative artificial intelligence vision for inclusive growth and sustainable innovation, anchored by the Ministry of External Affairs, with three core guiding principles, known as sutras, which are: People, Planet, Progress.
The symposium on cooperative AI has a broad representation of policymakers, private sector leaders, and public interest stakeholders, including farmers, academics, and civil society groups, in addition to government and business representatives, who are participating in these discussions, demonstrating the overall philosophy of India as applied technology.
There are some side events that will illustrate creative examples of the use of technology in various sectors and ways that it will be deployed, with an eventual transition to closed-door strategic discussions with top-level leadership only.
There will then be public policy panel discussions to develop pathways to partnership and collaboration among nations to advance the international community’s collective interest in developing innovative national and international cooperative AI solutions, contrasting with past summits that had a much greater focus on security.
Finally, the digital public infrastructure examples received so much praise that they proved beyond a doubt to the global community that their technology is aligned to empower citizens and sustain lives.
Global South Leadership Shapes India AI Summit Outcomes
Representatives from twelve nations will be present at Prime Minister Modi’s invitation. All regions are represented at the world leader level (including Europe, Latin America, Africa, and Asia). Now there are Minister-level delegations from 45 nations to further leverage cooperation.
UN Secretary General, plus numerous senior international officials, are attending. Working groups created by delegates have already offered their recommendations over the past year. Seven themed chakras are the guides for cooperation/collaboration and creation of policy. Discussions cover skilling, automation, and transitions of the workforce.
Modi points to the need for balancing innovation with social responsibility. The Summit will strengthen India’s leadership role in the Global South. In all, New Delhi is helping to redefine Artificial Intelligence as a facilitator of shared progress.
