The world gathered in New Delhi for an unprecedented technology summit and created a huge amount of media attention. On the opening day of the AI Impact Summit, large crowds filled Bharat Mandapam.

The success of the first day can be attributed to the huge amount of promotional activities that took place in the months preceding the summit, which resulted in overwhelming first-day attendance numbers. As a result, Visitors filled all the venues, including halls, walkways, and discussion spaces. The sheer size of the summit indicates India’s emergence as a major host and convening country.
Artificial Intelligence was the main topic of conversation for the summit with respect to development and inclusion. The organisers of the AI Impact Summit claimed that they have never held a summit of this size before in the world. The AI Impact Summit is not only the largest AI summit ever held, but India has also strategically chosen to host the AI Impact Summit within the framework of the Global South.
This choice of venue has a diplomatic and strategic significance. Policymakers emphasised inclusive and responsible AI deployment. At the same time, the summit had a mixture of innovative and policy-oriented activities. This event elevated voices to be heard outside the normal Western centres. Through this summit, India has changed the narrative around AI.
Scale, Participation, and First-Day Momentum at AI Impact Summit India
February 16 marked the first day of a five-day summit. More than 100 countries are represented by officials, with more than 600 startups showcasing their AI innovations.
Over 100 CEOs from around the world attended the discussions. Dozens of booths showcased innovative technology throughout the exhibition area. Attendees arrived early morning to visit the summit. The plenary meetings quickly became standing room only.
“We have more than 2.5 lakh registrations,” said Secretary S. Krishnan of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology on the sidelines of the summit. There was no cost to attend the exhibition, providing a wide range of views and experiences for attendees. Many different types of companies represented their work at the exhibition, including businesses, universities, and technology companies from around the world.
The large number of people created a high level of crowd density at the event, resulting in logistical stress points throughout the event. Long lines were reported by attendees as they waited to enter or exit the summit. Security and sanitization between exhibitors briefly interrupted exhibit activity while waiting for the process to complete. Despite these disruptions, attendees indicated that levels of engagement during the summit were high. The turnout at the summit highlighted the visibility of India’s growing AI ecosystem.
Innovation, Diplomacy And Strategic Signalling
People, Planet, and Progress was the primary focus of the Summit’s agenda. There was a strong emphasis on collaboration between the developed and developing economies.
PM Modi inaugurated the AI Impact Expo, stating, “The AI Impact Summit will help create an ongoing global dialogue on many topics related to AI, like creating innovation and synergy, using AI responsibly, etc… The outcomes of this conference will contribute to a progressive, innovative, and opportunity-oriented future”.
Leaders from more than twenty countries attended the Summit. Technology CEOs were part of the private “closed-door” sessions. India showcased AI as a tool for development. Innovative solutions were developed to facilitate the movement of large groups of visitors during the Summit.
Facial-recognition technology was used at the entrance to greatly reduce entry congestion and improve access to the venue. The Summit demonstrated the difference between the ambition of creating various policies and the challenges in executing those policies globally.
While the crowded nature of the Summit created very poor working conditions, the enthusiasm of the participants was palpable. The Summit allowed India to reposition itself as a global AI convenor. Additionally, it will serve to highlight India’s broader global technology aspirations.
