India’s Sarvam AI model is rising quickly to be a top competitor to leading global companies in artificial intelligence, including ChatGPT and Gemini. Sarvam AI is getting praise from Google CEO Sundar Pichai and is being launched as a homegrown alternative to those products.
At the India AI Impact Summit 2026, Pichai noted the progress of Sarvam AI as well as India’s increasing strength in the area of Ai. He stated that India’s developer ecosystem is “second to none” and that Sarvam AI is “very well positioned” because it creates models to meet the needs of the Indian market.
What is Sarvam AI? Founded in August 2023 by Vivek Raghavan and Pratyush Kumar. Their goal is to create artificial intelligence tools developed specifically for India’s diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds.
Sarvam AI is a multimodal artificial intelligence system. It incorporates text, speech, and images together; therefore, it has many possible applications such as generating image captions, reading scanned images, interpreting charts, and analyzing complex data in tabular format.
One of the critical missions of Sarvam AI is to access valuable information hidden away in physical archives like government repositories, historical literature, and documents written in regional languages that are difficult for any of the global AI competitors to interpret.
Sarvam AI has a unique advantage over global models that prioritize English because datasets used in training are based on all 22 official languages within India. This allows for working with local content and regional scripts in a manner that few other models can match.
What Makes Sarvam AI Different?
Sarvam AI has two powerful features: speech and translation.
The speech recognition component of Sarvam AI has a single lightweight model that supports 10 Indian languages, with the ability to automatically detect the spoken language in near real-time mode; and, it is also efficient enough for running efficiently on smartphones.
The translation component supports over 110 languages, enabling users to communicate instantaneously in any Indian language to/from English without relying on intermediate translations.
According to company claims, the accuracy level at which Sarvam Vision, the document intelligence system, operates is higher than that of many global competitors based on benchmark tests performed on specific OCR test datasets.
How does Sarvam AI compare with ChatGPT and Gemini?
The main difference between Sarvam AI’s approach and most global competitors (e.g., ChatGPT and Gemini) is that Sarvam is India-first.
Although many global AI models are adaptable to most countries across the globe, Sarvam is designed specifically for use in India with a primary focus of helping non-English speakers access AI through features such as voice recognition, understanding regional language and support for unique formats associated with different parts of India.
Sarvam believes this approach to AI will ensure that hundreds of millions of people in India who currently do not use the internet because of language barriers will have access to artificial intelligence.

Why Sarvam’s AI Model Is Important
The rise of Sarvam AI reflects India’s desire to create an independent artificial intelligence ecosystem, rather than depending on those technologies from other countries.
Sarvam is also seeing increased government support and interest from investors in India’s technology sector.
While being smaller than most global AI companies, Sarvam has been gaining recognition as one of the most rapidly growing AI businesses in India due to the company’s unique concentration on developing technology that is designed to serve India.
As they continue to develop their Sarvam AI system, the impact of their work is expected to have significant implications on the future of how artificial intelligence is deployed throughout India and potentially impact how countries across the globe develop their own AI technology.
