AAP excise case fundamentally altered the party’s political trajectory by shifting the debate from governance performance to moral credibility. For possibly AAP’s rise to power and the success of its governance were written about negatively for several years, with substantially differing interpretations of the same set of facts. Since there were consistent court orders denying relief to AAP’s senior leaders, it was perceived publicly that AAP was, in fact, guilty of wrongdoing. Therefore, before an official verdict, political damage was subsequently done to AAP. However, once the political landscape in Delhi was solidified, AAP received legal relief.
How the BJP weaponised the excise controversy in the AAP excise case
The BJP viewed the excise matter as campaign leverage. AAP leaders framed the party as ethically compromised. AAP’s origins were compared with its alleged governance contradictions. Protests were intentionally directed against slum and low-income neighborhoods. Demonstrators called for M/s Sisodia and AAP Leader Kejriwal to be held accountable. The BJP developed a message discipline as a result of repeated losses in court. Cadres argued that the courts established the basis for looking seriously at AAP’s law violations.
AAP could not effectively respond to the allegations against them. Despite the absence of a trial verdict, the narrative was maintained and became cemented in voters’ minds. Over time, additional controversies contributed to AAP losing its credibility. The one “Sheesha Mahal” symbolism further discouraged voters. Claims of governance paralysis expanded the attack area. Ultimately, the BJP converted suspicion into electoral momentum. The verdict in Delhi reflected AAP’s success in winning over voters through their accumulated narrative.
Why the court verdict boosts AAP in Punjab
The court has released Arvind Kejriwal and Manish Sisodia before their trial. The judges found no intent or larger conspiracy behind what occurred. The Aam Aadmi Party saw the ruling as welcome vindication. In the short term, Punjab was the primary political beneficiary. Party officials framed the ruling as a restoration of moral authority to the Aam Aadmi Party. The party cadres regained their confidence ahead of the important electoral campaign, during which they had made commitments.
The narrative of Kejriwal’s personal integrity has once again found traction. The Punjab leadership has established an ambitious plan for outreach across the state. Additionally, the ruling has comforted some members of the party regarding the previous centralisation of power. The Aam Aadmi Party has now regained its anti-corruption credentials, and party leadership intends to consolidate its credibility for governance. Several of the opposition parties were critical of both the timing and the political implications of the ruling. Nevertheless, the ruling has created a significantly altered dynamic in the parties’ ongoing campaigns. Punjab is now the anchor for the Aam Aadmi Party’s hopes for its national revival.
