In a rare and shocking moment within the Supreme Court of India, a lawyer on Monday allegedly attempted to assault Chief Justice of India (CJI) BR Gavai during court hearing. This happened when a Bench headed by the CJI was hearing mentioning of cases.
The lawyer, suddenly moved towards the dais and seemed to take off his shoe with the intention of throwing it at the CJI. Security officials, however, moved in and took him away from the courtroom quickly.
As security escorted him, the lawyer yelled, “Sanatan ka apman nahi sahenge”
Notwithstanding the short tumult, CJI Gavai was calm. While speaking to the lawyers, he remarked, “Don’t get distracted by all this. We are not distracted. These things do not affect me.”
What Provoked the Incident?
The incident reportedly stemmed from CJI Gavai’s earlier remarks in a case about restoring a seven-foot beheaded idol of Lord Vishnu in Khajuraho.

In that hearing, the Chief Justice had said, “Go and ask the deity itself to do something now. You say you are a staunch devotee of Lord Vishnu. So go and pray now. It’s an archaeological site and ASI needs to give permission.”
The remark soon went viral on social media, with some groups expressing outrage over what they claimed was disrespect shown to Hindu sentiments by the CJI.
CJI clarified in court that his statement is taken out of context. This occurred on social media,” he explained.
Government’s Response
After the controversy, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta defended the Chief Justice, criticizing the social media tendency to over-sensationalize incidents.
“We have seen this. There’s Newton’s law that every action has an equal reaction, but now every action has a disproportionate social media reaction, milord,” Mehta remarked in court.
