The rising war costs of modern conflicts have become evident in the ongoing confrontation between Iran and the United States. The high cost of modern warfare has been evident since the beginning of the current conflict involving Iran and the United States, and is already showing itself through the cost of military operations. When the U.S. launched a series of extensive air strikes in Iran within a matter of days, it placed an enormous financial strain on the military for both weapons and defense systems. A recent estimate from the Pentagon puts the total operational cost of the conflict so far. Each branch of the military is using artificial intelligence as part of its targeting process. Thousands of Iranian military facilities were attacked during the first week of the conflict alone.

Additionally, U.S. and Israeli forces have conducted multiple missile strikes throughout the greater region, including Israeli strikes against Hezbollah positions in Lebanon, which resulted in hundreds of thousands of civilians being displaced. Finally, Iran has conducted missile strikes against several of its neighbors in the Gulf Region. As a result, the conflict encompasses far more than one battlefield. As the fighting continues into the future, the discussions in Washington will increasingly be dominated by financial considerations.
Precision Weapons and Missile Defence Increase War Costs
According to the Pentagon’s estimates, the U.S. has spent more than $11 billion since the beginning of the war. Officials told senators in recent closed-door meetings that these cost estimates do not account for previously deployed troops or money spent on ships or aircraft. Therefore, lawmakers expect that the total costs will be higher than estimated. Congressional briefs on early weapons purchases indicated that $5.6 billion was expended within two (2) days after hostilities began.
Many operations utilized precision-guided munitions. Reports indicated that many AGM-154 guided bombs were used frequently. Each of these weapons costs hundreds of thousands of dollars (i.e., the U.S. purchased thousands of these previously). Meanwhile, defence planners are now looking for less expensive alternatives. For instance, Joint Direct Attack Munition (JDAM) kits provide for low-cost precision (guidance kits cost about $38,000, and the warhead itself costs about $1,000).
Cheap drones create costly defence challenges
The Shahed drones manufactured in Iran are one kind of challenge. The cost of these drones is just tens of thousands of dollars. However, to intercept these drones, most of the interceptors will cost millions per launch (Patriot, THAAD). Thus, according to analysts, this will lead to an imbalance of cost exchanges that could impede prolonged warfare. The political debate in Washington has started to escalate. Some Republicans wish to increase production capacity for weapons, while others are concerned about the rapidly escalating cost of defence. Democrats are also looking for clarity regarding a long-term strategy.
Senator Chris Coons expressed concerns regarding the great financial burden. He said, “I expect that the current total operating number is significantly above that. If all you’re looking at is the replacement cost for the munitions used, it’s already well beyond $10 billion.”
Meanwhile, advisers reportedly urge clearer plans for ending the conflict. However, battlefield developments still shape the war’s uncertain trajectory.
