Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) has announced a historic tie-up with the parent firm of Facebook, Meta Platforms, to establish a new joint venture that will develop enterprise artificial intelligence (AI) services in India.
The newly formed entity — Reliance Enterprise Intelligence Limited (REIL) — will be equally owned by Reliance Intelligence Limited, an entirely owned subsidiary of RIL, and Facebook Overseas, Inc., a Meta subsidiary. Reliance will own 70%, and Meta will have the remaining 30%, as per a regulatory filing done by RIL on Friday.
Both firms have placed an initial investment of ₹855 crore, highlighting the magnitude of their intent to speed up AI adoption in Indian businesses.
A Strategic AI Partnership
REIL will concentrate on developing, selling, and distributing enterprise AI solutions and platforms using Reliance’s large digital and industrial network along with Meta’s open-source Llama models.
The business seeks to bring enterprise-class AI within reach of Indian companies of any size, from startups to enterprises. It will offer two core services:
AI Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS): Enabling companies to deploy and tailor generative AI models.
Sector-Specific AI Solutions: Ready-to-use sales, marketing, finance, IT operations, and customer service tools.
Under the filing, the REIL incorporation does not involve any government or regulatory approval and constitutes no related-party transaction. Reliance Intelligence will make an initial subscription of 20 million equity shares of ₹10 each amounting to ₹2 crore.
Leadership Vision
At Reliance’s AGM in August, Chairman Mukesh Ambani had sketched out the AI vision of the company — one that marries Meta’s global technology know-how with Reliance’s local infrastructure.
“Partnering with Meta brings our vision of giving AI to every Indian and enterprise to life. By integrating Meta’s open-source Llama models with our deep industry expertise, we will democratize enterprise-grade AI for every Indian organization,” Ambani said.
Echoing this sentiment, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg called the collaboration “a significant step in bringing open-source AI to real-world business use.”
“We’re excited to deepen our partnership with Reliance to bring the power of open-source AI to Indian developers and enterprises. Through this joint venture, we’re putting Meta’s Llama models into real-world use,” Zuckerberg said in a statement.
A Deeper Digital Alliance
The collaboration is a continuation of Reliance’s larger effort to integrate artificial intelligence into its digital properties, telco networks, and retail businesses. Ambani also indicated in the spring that the company had plans to further collaborate with Google and Meta to create India-specific sovereign AI models that could cater to both business and government ecosystems.
Industry insiders argue that the new venture will bolster India’s domestic AI prowess at a time when competition for data sovereignty and AI infrastructure is heating up worldwide. The partnership also solidifies Reliance’s increasing leadership in cloud computing, data analytics, and AI infrastructure, making it a primary influencer of India’s digital economy.
Financial Outlook
Reliance’s recent quarterly numbers convey solid momentum in its businesses. For the second quarter of FY26, the company reported a 9.67% year-over-year increase in consolidated net profit at ₹18,165 crore, with revenue rising nearly 10% to ₹2,58,898 crore.
RIL shares inched higher by 0.23% to settle at ₹1,451.45 on the BSE on Friday, post the announcement of the AI joint venture.
The Bigger Picture
REIL’s launch represents a milestone in India’s AI journey. By combining Meta’s open-source AI models with Reliance’s scale, infrastructure, and enterprise presence, the partnership aims to reduce the overall cost of AI deployment for Indian businesses and enable a new generation of homegrown innovation.
The business is likely to place more emphasis on cloud, hybrid, and on-premise offerings, enabling flexible deployment while maintaining data localization and adherence to Indian laws — a critical differentiator from international AI players.
As India advances toward its vision of becoming an international AI hub, the Reliance-Meta partnership may emerge as the defining model of how local and international technology leaders collaborate to influence the next wave of the digital economy. https://www.ril.com/sites/default/files/2025-08/Reliance_and_Meta_Partner_for_Enterprise_AI%20Solutions_for_India.pdf
