On Monday, Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar hosted a press conference in New Delhi. He said, “Today we are here regarding the rollout of the second phase of the Special Intensive Revision. I extend my greetings to the voters of Bihar and bow before the 7.5 crore voters who took part in a successful SIR. The Commission also met election officials from all 36 states and discussed the process in detail.”
During the first phase of elections in Bihar, those who cast votes were verified at more than 90,000 polling booths. “The participation of voters in Bihar has set a strong example for the rest of the country,” the CEC said. Why Voter Roll Revision Is Essential for Accurate Electoral Rolls
The Special Intensive Revision exercise is applicable for preparing accurate electoral rolls. All errors, duplicities, and out-of-date entries are corrected collectively. The SIR is conducted each time to take into account migration, deaths of old electors, and the addition of new electors, etc.
There have been eight SIR exercises conducted since 1951. Followed by a pre-clearance update to the electoral rolls in India, with the last such exercise being within 2002-2004.
How It Works
Each Booth Level Officer (BLO) is responsible for roughly 1,000 voters, with an Electoral Registration Officer (ERO) as the overall supervisor for the Assembly constituency, which is typically a revenue officer of SDM rank. There are also a number of Assistant EROs (AEROs) to assist the ERO.
The next phase is focused on transparency, inclusiveness, and accuracy of voter lists in all participating states and union territories. The public is expected to work with the BLO, and the inclusiveness and accuracy will follow.
The Election Commission has stressed that these processes help strengthen democracy as they empower every eligible voter to participate accurately in elections.
