ASEAN, a group of 11 influential nations formed as an association in Southeast Asia, includes India as a dialogue partner, along with the U.S., China, Japan, and Australia. Malaysia hosted the annual summit as the current chair.
The Strategic Importance of India-U.S. Relations
Officials have stated the meetings signify India deepening its engagement in the Indo-Pacific as a strategic priority for India, although they also stress the strength of India-U.S. relations more broadly than trade, to include climate change, security, and economic stability.
The high-level meetings signal not only that progress has been made in finalizing the trade agreement but also deeper diplomatic engagement, and reflect a shared interest in regional stability and growing economic engagement.
