
India-Russia Strategic Engagement has elevated its high-level diplomatic engagement this week, while preparations carry on for President Vladimir Putin’s expected visit to New Delhi on December 5. The consultations emphasized the shared desire of both countries to advance cooperation in the security, maritime, and economic sectors.
Modi and Patrushev discuss maritime cooperation
Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Nikolai Patrushev, the Chairman of the Maritime Board of the Russian Federation, in New Delhi. They discussed the preparations for the annual summit, and reviewed agreements for enhancing maritime cooperation.
According to officials, both countries’ officials expressed strong interest in developing naval capabilities and increasing cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region, India Russia Strategic Engagement.
Patrushev additionally led the Russian delegation in the maritime discussions. He met with National Security Advisor Ajit Doval to continue conversations related to Doval’s visit to Moscow in August where he met with President Putin.
Jaishankar meets with Putin in Moscow
Meanwhile, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met with President Putin in Moscow while attending the SCO Heads of Government meeting. Jaishankar noted the various risks to global supply chains and emphasized diversification. He reiterated India’s strong position against terrorism and said that the SCO cannot “whitewash” or dismiss extremist activity.
India opens two new consulates in Russia
As diplomatic contacts convert into relationships in motion, India has opened two new Consulates General in Yekaterinburg and Kazan. Jaishankar said each of the two offices will further develop India-Russia interaction and foster a new stage of bilateral cooperation.
The opening ceremony was attended by Andrey Rudenko, Deputy Minister of Foreign Relations of Russia, and Vinay Kumar, Ambassador of India. Jaishankar expressed gratitude to the Russian authorities for allowing things to come together so smoothly.
Yekaterinburg: A Strategic Industrial Center Jaishankar labeled Yekaterinburg as Russia’s “third capital,” due to its relevant industrial importance.
He shared that in this region, the city has its significance in heavy engineering, defence manufacturing, metallurgy, gem cutting, as well as nuclear fuel and medical equipment. He stated that the new Consulate would provide an opening to explore greater avenues of cooperation in technology, commerce, and industrial innovation.
Kazan: A Cultural and Economic Bridge. Jaishankar also labeled Kazan as a multicultural convergence point bridging Russia and Asia. He indicated that the strengths in Kazan are oil refining, automobiles, defense production, pharmaceuticals, and electrical equipment, which will make it a good partner for India.
He further indicated that the Consulate would develop people-to-people ties and enhance exchanges in education.
Inauguration of consulates in Mumbai and Bengaluru
India’s External Affairs Minister, S. Jaishankar, inaugurated a consulate and representation office in Russia’s economic centers of Bengaluru and Mumbai for larger businesses. He stated, “A country has a consular presence not only for business services but also to better connect the Russian people with India,” and emphasized, “Trade is the one thing, tourism is another, and being the diaspora, it’s important.” Feature also contributes to India’s broader engagement strategy, indicating Russia’s approval and participation in expanding the reach of Indian businesses.
