President Donald Trump issued an unprecedented airspace warning yesterday directed at both Pilots and organized crime groups. This alert came as military tensions are already high. Many analysts believe that the United States has recently made significant military deployments in the Caribbean and around Venezuela. Analysts believe that the United States is also preparing for future militarized ground operations near Venezuela.
Trump used social media to deliver his warning publicly. He wrote: “To all airlines, pilots, drug dealers, and human traffickers, please consider the airspace above and surrounding Venezuela to be closed in its entirety.” His post mirrored another message stating: “To all Airlines, Pilots, Drug Dealers, and Human Traffickers, please consider THE AIRSPACE ABOVE AND SURROUNDING VENEZUELA TO BE CLOSED IN ITS ENTIRETY.”
Analysts noted that Washington has no legal authority to close off foreign airspace. That said, US officials are concerned that airlines may proceed with caution in possible changes to their flight routes. In addition, US aviation regulatory agencies have warned of increased military activity in the area, creating additional operational uncertainty for airlines around the world.
Recently, the Venezuelan government banned several major airlines all at once and ordered them to resume their flights within 48 hours on a national basis. Similarly, US officials stated that they anticipate an increase in drug trafficking operations soon, and may initiate additional operations from land-based locations shortly thereafter. As a result, regional military forces are now preparing for increased US engagement in the area, while some analysts speculate that recent statements from both the US and Venezuelan governments indicate that the US has plans for broader intervention in Venezuela.
US deployments expand as Washington sharpens its pressure campaign
Recently, the US has sent a large naval force to the Caribbean. In addition, the USS Gerald Ford arrived quickly at strike range. The United States also deployed almost 15,000 troops to the area. The United States stated that the purpose of these deployments was to combat drug trafficking threats only. But many analysts are skeptical of the stated reasons for these deployments.
Venezuela has rejected the United States’ accusations regarding drug traffickers. The Venezuelan government has called the drug allegations political pretexts for military intervention, and they claim that the United States has destabilising behaviour and motives towards Venezuela.
The US Federal Aviation Administration has previously alerted airline companies to the escalation of tensions between the US and Venezuela. Airline companies also faced pressure to change their flight schedules very quickly. Recently, monitoring authorities have tracked interdictions in the region
The United States has conducted multiple air strikes on suspected smuggling boats this year alone. United States officials state that these boats were transporting large quantities of illegal narcotics. However, the United States has not released any evidence to support these claims publicly.
The government of Venezuela has claimed that one of the main objectives of the US government’s actions towards Venezuela is to overthrow the Maduro government. Furthermore, the Venezuelan government has accused the US government of causing instability in the region. The Venezuelan government has strongly condemned the claims made by Western governments related to recent Venezuelan elections, claiming that foreign nations misrepresented the processes carried out within the country.
Political designations intensify confrontation between Washington and Caracas
Recently, The US formally designated Cartel de los Soles as a Foreign Terrorist Organization. US government officials alleged that Maduro was in charge of the cartel’s leadership structure, and US intelligence agencies alleged that the cartel had infiltrated state institutions and corrupting military and intelligence services throughout the country. Conversely, Venezuela did not agree with the designation; Venezuelan officials stated that the cartel is entirely the result of politically motivated “invention.”
In contrast to Venezuela, US officials vociferously defended the designation, citing the cartel’s presence throughout various sectors, and asserting that the cartel poses a direct threat to the region’s stability. Some analysts feel that these allegations have increased diplomatic tensions between the two countries, and both countries are gearing up for a further escalation of hostilities.
