Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu apologized to Qatar’s leaders for the Israeli airstrike on Doha. Netanyahu apologised during an unusual three-way phone call with U.S. President Donald Trump, confirmed by the White House on Monday.
The White House quoted Netanyahu as saying that Israel will never again in the future conduct such an attack and also expressed regret for Israel violating Qatari sovereignty. The leaders also discussed a potential plan to end the near two-year war in Gaza and greater aspirations for Middle East stability.
The September 9 attack on Doha defied Hamas’s political leadership who had traveled to Qatar to weigh a U.S.-backed ceasefire proposal for Gaza. Qatar condemned the attack as a “flagrant violation of all international laws and norms.”
President Trump clarified at the time that Netanyahu made a personal decision on the strike. “I directly instructed special envoy Steve Witkoff to inform the Qataris of the attack, although regretfully it was too late,” Trump said.
Monday’s White House negotiations intends to push Netanyahu into committing to a Gaza peace agreement. Trump was optimistic, saying, “I am very confident” about achieving peace. A Qatari technical team was also reported to have joined the negotiations, highlighting Qatar’s role as a mediator to the conflict.
For Netanyahu, the apology is an unusual gesture and step toward reconciliation with Qatar. The meeting underscored American efforts to broker peace and demonstrated growing diplomatic momentum toward ending the Gaza crisis.
