Anthropic is making an aggressive move to gain chatbot users and allow easy transitions to its Claude platform without starting from scratch, while at the same time dealing with political pressure in Washington.
Anthropic announced an updated interface that integrates months of conversation history from other chatbots in less than 60 seconds. This announcement follows a refusal by Anthropic to enter into a contract with the Pentagon over military use restrictions, heightening tensions between the company and the Trump administration.
Anthropic’s message is simple: Don’t lose years of AI context (knowledge) simply because you want to test a new model.
Seamless migration designed to remove switching friction
Anthropic initially launched data migration tools in October 2025, but the company states that the process is now “significantly better.”
Using the new data import tools, users will copy and paste an existing prompt to the competitor’s chatbot, which will then create a historical record of relevant conversations for that user in Claude. The feature is prominently displayed on a new landing page with the tagline “Switch to Claude without starting over.”
Anthropic’s value proposition is tied closely to the fact that many users spend months developing prompts, teaching AI systems their personal style, preferred tone, and working processes. They feel this type of historical context should move with you when switching between platforms, and therefore create less of a barrier to trying out a different model.
The addition of Claude’s memory feature, previously limited to paid subscribers, to all users now includes those who use the free tier.
Users will have access to their memories in the settings, allowing them to add, edit and delete memories as well. This will create a more tailored experience with Claude as it gives users the experience of continuing a conversation rather than starting again.
Rising popularity amid political standoffs
Increasing the number of people using Claude has coincided with the recent surge in Claude’s user base, making it the most downloaded free app in the Apple App Store; surpassing both OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini.
Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic has stated that Claude will remain a safer choice in AI, voicing the desire for their models not to be used with fully autonomous weapons or for mass surveillance of American citizens.
Antropic’s stance on this issue contributed to the failure of negotiations with the Pentagon and shortly after Anthropic rejected the defense department’s offer OpenAI announced their own agreement with the Department of Defense, resulting in quite a bit of debate from users.
President Donald Trump has described Anthropic as “woke” and is looking to restrict its use within the federal government, while Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has labelled Anthropic a “supply-chain risk,” which is an unprecedented designation that Anthropic plans to challenge in court.

Strategic timing in a crowded AI market
Anthropic’s desire to make it easier to transfer history between chatbots is an intentional strategy, used by Anthropic to build its brand around trust from users and ethics while facing increased regulatory and political scrutiny.
In making it easier for people to move their chatbot history, Anthropic is effectively reducing customer costs to switch to another chatbot in a highly competitive market filled with AI tools where customer loyalty is built primarily on accumulated experiences with their chatbot.
While it remains to be seen if the Pentagon dispute will escalate, Anthropic appears to be betting that user experience (with continuity) will outweigh the challenges presented by a politically volatile environment.
