Mamata Banerjee, the Chief Minister of West Bengal, declared that all young people in West Bengal who are unemployed will receive a cash assistance of ₹1,500 every month. The announcement was made at a rally protesting the Election Commission’s deletion of names from the electoral rolls as part of the Special Intensive Revision of the electoral rolls.

Banerjee’s announcement comes just prior to the next assembly elections in West Bengal and has a significant political impact. She connected the rollout of payments to International Women’s Day and indicated that, as a result, the government would be able to provide payments to eligible young people in West Bengal beginning tomorrow, rather than waiting until April.
“Since tomorrow is International Women’s Day, we have changed the payment date,” announced Banerjee.
The West Bengal unemployment allowance targets educated youth
This initiative aims to provide young adults with job placement services and help them achieve financial independence. All applicants must have completed high school and must be between 21-40 years of age. Monthly payments, regardless of whether the applicant is enrolled in post-secondary school or is already a graduate, will be made to all eligible men and women who have completed high school or are currently attending a college or university.
Additionally, the Minister announced that those who are currently participating in Yuva Sathi may also be receiving funds through the Yuva Sathi program if they are not also receiving any other type of assistance under any other programs (including grants).
Minister Banerjee also stated that all youth who are currently enrolled in an institution of higher education will qualify for additional financial assistance through this program to help unemployed persons achieve self-supporting status.
Government highlights employment and industry initiatives
Banerjee argued that her government has introduced many job creation schemes and says unemployment in West Bengal has dropped by about 40% since she became Chief Minister. She also said almost 40 lakh people have been educated through the Utkarsha Bangla scheme, and about 10 lakh of those who have received training have attained jobs. She indicated that the government has improved job prospects by creating links between trained workers and manufacturing companies. Banerjee also noted that approximately 1.5 crore people are now employed in the small-scale industrial sector. The government has also announced that it will distribute ₹4,000 to landless farmers for social security assistance. The West Bengal unemployment allowance is part of a broader effort by the state government to support youth employment and economic stability.
