Starmer India Visit: Advancing UK-India Strategic and Economic Ties
The upcoming Starmer India visit on October 8-9 marks UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s first official trip to India, aimed at boosting bilateral trade, strengthening strategic partnerships, and fostering collaboration in technology, finance, and education.
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer is set to travel to India on October 8-9 to strengthen bilateral relations and promote economic growth, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said on Saturday. This will be Starmer’s first official visit to India as UK Prime Minister.

Starmer India Visit: Vision 2035 and Strategic Goals
Starmer will meet Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Mumbai on October 9 to discuss progress under the bilateral comprehensive strategic partnership. The discussions will be in line with “Vision 2035,” which is a 10-year plan to channel initiatives in trade and investment, defence and security, technology, climate, energy, health and education, as well as people-to-people initiatives. The plan aims to increase cooperation in these priority areas while establishing measurable deliverable outcomes in a 10-year time frame.
Opportunities in Economy and Trade
Modi and Starmer will meet with industry leaders and businesses during the visit to discuss opportunities surrounding the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA). CETA is central to the future India-UK economic relationship, and it will do a lot to perfect trade, investment, and market access between the countries.
Starmer’s visit comes after Modi’s visit to the UK in July, when India and the UK completed a free trade agreement (FTA). The FTA is expected to increase bilateral trade by $35 billion in the long run and will lower tariffs on goods, ranging from textiles to whisky, while bolstering access for Indian and UK businesses. The visit by Starmer is to reinforce commitments made during that visit and advance progress towards the completion of the FTA.
Technology, Innovation, And Fintech
Both leaders will attend the Global Fintech Fest in Mumbai, where they will deliver keynote addresses and meet with policymakers, innovators, and industry leaders. Explore key areas around leveraging technology and innovation to drive sustainable economic growth. The visit will accelerate cooperation in fintech, digital services, and green energy.
Starmer India Visit: Addressing Regional and Global Challenges
Modi and Starmer will address regional and global matters such as geopolitical crises and economic instability caused by global trade policies. In May, the UK finalized non-binding terms with the US to brace against American tariffs, while India has only recently resumed bilateral trade talks with the US. The talks will create room for conciliation on trade and economic policy.
Security and Counter-Terrorism Collaboration
Also on the agenda is India’s efforts to tackle terrorism, curb pro-Khalistani individuals in the UK, and return economic offenders and fugitives. Both leaders will likely talk about how to increase intelligence sharing, law enforcement coordination, and counter-terrorism collaboration.
Looking Ahead
Starmer’s visit comes at an opportune moment in the India-UK relationship as both countries want to enhance their strategic, economic, and security relationships. The meetings, interactions with the industry, and the Global Fintech Fest will assert shared objectives and strengthen the long-term strategic partnership.
