High-level talks between the United States (US) and India are fostering increased strategic cooperation between the two nations. Marco Rubio met with Subrahmanyam Jaishankar in New Delhi to negotiate tariffs, market access, and supply chains. Afterward, Rubio said negotiations had reached their final phase and that he was confident that an agreement could be completed in the upcoming weeks. In addition to reducing tariffs, this proposed agreement would cover investments and emerging technologies and industrial partnerships, among other items. Therefore, the agreement seeks to modernise and comprehensively reshape the economic relationship between countries; thus, trade forms the basis of this larger partnership.
US-India Talks Expand Security and Indo-Pacific Coordination
Discussions included maritime security and energy supplies. The two leaders both emphasized safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz. Rubio stated that there was progress in resolving issues in that area, while restating his belief that Iran should never have access to nuclear weapons. Jaishankar supported India’s commitment to protecting maritime navigation, as well as maintaining stable energy supplies. Rubio also pointed out increased cooperation within the framework of the Quad. Very important in those discussions were critical minerals and security in the Indo-Pacific region.
